How we picked (and our disclosure)
Search “soccer IQ app” and most of what comes back is trivia quizzes, fan stats apps, or ball-mastery apps with “IQ” in the name. Those can be fun, but they don’t train what coaches mean by soccer IQ: seeing what’s around you and picking the right option fast.
An app made this list only if:
- It trains on-field thinking: decisions, scanning, awareness or reading the game. Not rules, history or trivia.
- It’s real and current: we found it on its official website or an official app store in October 2026.
- We could check the basics: what it trains, how you pay, and what device it needs, from the official source.
We didn’t buy every subscription and test each one for weeks, so this is a comparison of what each product offers and costs, not a hands-on review. We haven’t ranked them 1 to 7, because the best one depends on your budget, your hardware and your weak spot. Instead each gets a “best for” label.
Disclosure: one app on this list, Pause & Decide, is ours. We’ve marked it clearly and listed its weaknesses as well as its strengths. Unscouted has no connection to any other product here. Prices checked October 2026, in US dollars. They change, so check the official page before you pay.

The 7 apps, one by one
1. Soccer IntelliGym: best for adaptive brain training
What it trains: computer-based cognitive training for situational awareness, working memory, task switching, peripheral attention and decision-making under pressure. 30-minute sessions, 2 to 3 times a week recommended. Its FAQ says it isn’t a video game, skips “complex graphics” on purpose, and adjusts difficulty to each player.
Price: individual plans are $21.90/mo month to month, $17.95/mo on a 6-month prepaid plan, or $15.90/mo on a 12-month prepaid plan, with a 7-day free trial. Family/team plans for 2 to 4 people run from $12.90 to $17.90 per month. On the App Store: $21.90 monthly, $99.90 seasonal, $190.99 annual.
Platform and age: desktop or mobile; the iOS app is listed for iPhone. For ages “as young as 10 years old to 25 and over”.
Watch out for: it’s abstract by design, so you won’t see your own position’s match moments. The iOS app had 2.5 stars from 22 ratings when we checked. Its improvement figures are the company’s own claims.

2. Be Your Best: best for scanning in VR
What it trains: VR soccer training for scanning, timing, decision-making, awareness and vision. Modes: Challenges, Practice, Matchplay (11-a-side) and Career, with scanning stats. The FAQ says there are scenarios for every outfield position.
Price: $19/mo billed annually or $29/mo billed monthly, 3 seats included. No free trial mentioned, 14-day money-back guarantee.
Platform and age: app on the Meta Quest store, companion app on iOS and Android. No minimum age; VR recommended from 12.
Watch out for: you need a headset (or access to one). The FAQ mentions a 12-month minimum subscription, which conflicts with the monthly plan, so ask first.

3. Train Effective: best all-in-one training app
What it trains: mainly technique, fitness and mindset, with 150+ drills, sessions, workouts and programs. Its soccer IQ part is “Game Brain”, which the store listing calls “a performance analysis training tool” that walks you through pro players’ decisions, tactics and strategies using Premier League analysts.
Price: on its website, PRO is $13/mo billed annually and Academy (adds 1-on-1 mentorship and live masterclasses) is $33/mo billed annually, with a 7-day free trial. The US App Store lists several in-app prices, from $12.99 and $19.99 monthly to $399.99 for Academy 12 months.
Platform: iOS and Android. On Google Play it showed 1M+ downloads, about 4.5 stars, and an update in September 2026.
Watch out for: most of the app is drills, not decision training. Game Brain is described as teaching you how pros decide; the description doesn’t mention you making the call yourself against a clock.
Sources: pricing, Game Brain page, App Store, Google Play. Full breakdown: Train Effective alternative.
4. Pause & Decide (this one is ours): best for match situations by position, no subscription
What it trains: 100 real match moments on tactics boards, 20 for each position (striker, winger, number 10, midfielder, defender). You get 15 seconds to pick one of three options, then see the pro pick and which detail in the picture decides it.
Price: $27, one payment. A free 8-situation test, no sign-up.
Platform: runs in any browser on phone or computer. It’s not in an app store.
Watch out for: it’s a fixed set of 100, so once you’ve done them you’re repeating them. It doesn’t adapt to you, it doesn’t train the physical head-turn like VR, and we have no studies of our own to point to. Judge it on the free test.

8 match situations for your position, 15 seconds each, with the pro pick and why. Free, no sign-up, no card.
5. ScanBeat: best for building a scanning habit on the field
What it trains: the habit of looking around. You wear an Apple Watch during drills or small-sided games, and every time it vibrates you scan. Presets run from every 5 seconds (Beginner) down to every second, or you set your own interval.
Price: free download; subscription at $1.99 a week, $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year. The Beginner program has a 15-minute free trial.
Platform: iPhone plus an Apple Watch. The vibration training needs the watch.
Watch out for: it reminds you to look, it doesn’t teach you what to do with what you see. It’s new, with too few App Store ratings to show a score.

6. ProScan360: best for cheap cue drills with a coach or friend
What it trains: scanning, awareness, reaction and decisions. The screen flashes numbers, colors or both, and you or your coach decide what each cue means (for example “red = pass left”). Timing is adjustable, so it fits into drills you already do.
Price: $0.99 once. The listing says no ads or subscriptions.
Platform: iPhone and iPad.
Watch out for: it’s a tool, not a program. You have to design the drills, and it works best with someone to set it up. Too few ratings to show a score.

7. Football Scan Trainer: best for kids aged 5 to 12
What it trains: scanning, reaction and simple decisions. You set up four cones, prop up the phone and react to flashed colors, numbers or commands like “Turn Left” or “Shoot”. 21 drills in 7 categories, about 10 minutes a session, with a daily challenge.
Price: $2.99 once, no subscription.
Platform: iPhone. Works offline, no account.
Watch out for: it’s designed for ages 5 to 12, so a 16-year-old will find it basic. Too few ratings to show a score.

“IQ” apps that don’t train soccer IQ
A few apps you’ll see in search are real, but they aren’t decision training. Worth knowing so you don’t pay for the wrong thing:
- Soccer Training IQ (App Store): despite the name, its listing describes dribbling, passing, shooting, technique and fitness, by subscription ($12.99 a month or $69.99 a year). A technical training app. Listing.
- Trivia apps such as Footy Brains test what you know about soccer (or football, as most of the world calls it), not how you decide on the ball. Example listing.
- Ball-mastery apps like Techne Futbol and DribbleUp are good for technique but aren’t built around decisions.
Not included because we couldn’t check enough: Rezzil (VR) still has a Meta store page, but we couldn’t confirm its current content or price. Evolver 360 is a free iOS app that describes cognitive training for decisions and scanning, but its last update we could see was September 2025 and it has no ratings yet, so we couldn’t judge it.
Also worth knowing: an app isn’t the only way. Small-sided games are free and still the best decision training there is, and the book Soccer iQ by Dan Blank covers the principles. We compare all the routes in our soccer IQ training guide.

FAQ
What is the best soccer IQ app?
It depends on your hardware and budget. Soccer IntelliGym is a well-known screen-based cognitive trainer, Be Your Best is the main VR option, and Train Effective is a popular all-round training app (1M+ downloads on Google Play) with a decision-analysis feature. If you want position-specific match situations without a subscription, Pause & Decide (ours) costs $27 once.
Are soccer IQ apps worth it?
They can help with one part of the game: seeing and deciding. None replaces playing real games. Use free trials and money-back windows to check an app suits you before committing, and be careful with big improvement percentages, which usually come from the company itself.
Is there a free soccer IQ app?
Fully free options are rare. IntelliGym and Train Effective have 7-day free trials, ScanBeat has a 15-minute trial, and our free soccer IQ test gives you 8 match situations in the browser with no sign-up. Evolver 360 is listed as free on the App Store, but we couldn’t judge it.
Can you train soccer IQ on your phone?
Yes, partly. Phone apps can train reading situations, choosing options and attention. The physical habit of scanning is better trained on the field, for example with a watch reminder app or by setting yourself a target of two looks before every first touch.
What’s the difference between soccer IQ and football IQ?
Nothing. It’s the same idea: how well you read the game and make decisions. “Soccer” is the US term and “football” is used in most other countries.
