Quick answer: Soccer IntelliGym is a monthly or prepaid subscription for computer-based cognitive training: adaptive 30-minute sessions that target awareness, memory and decision-making. Pause & Decide is a one-off $27 set of 100 real match situations on tactics boards: you pick one of three options in 15 seconds, then see the pro pick and why. Pick IntelliGym if you want long, adaptive brain-training sessions. Pick Pause & Decide if you want short, position-specific match decisions with no subscription.

Disclosure: Pause & Decide is our product. Unscouted has no connection to IntelliGym. Everything said about IntelliGym below comes from its own website or its App Store listing, linked in each section. Prices checked October 2026. They can change, so check the official page before you buy.

Who should pick which

Soccer IntelliGym is probably the better fit if:

  • you like the idea of brain training that adapts its difficulty to you,
  • you’re happy to commit to 30-minute sessions two or three times a week,
  • you’re training with siblings or a team and can use a family or team plan,
  • you’re younger: IntelliGym says it’s built for players “as young as 10”.

Pause & Decide is probably the better fit if:

  • you want to practise the actual moments you face in a soccer match (or a football match, if that’s what you call it),
  • you want the answer explained: what the pro picks and which detail in the picture tells you,
  • you want situations for your own position,
  • you’d rather pay once than keep a subscription running,
  • you have 10 minutes, not 30.

What IntelliGym does well

It’s fair to start with the strengths, because there are real ones.

  • It adapts to you. IntelliGym’s FAQ says it uses AI to adjust the training levels to each player’s strengths and weaknesses. A fixed set of questions can’t do that.
  • It goes after the underlying skills. Instead of teaching you what to do in one situation, it aims at the mental skills behind every situation: attention, memory, switching focus.
  • It’s built for regular sessions. 30 minutes, two or three times a week, is a clear routine to stick to.
  • Plans for groups. Family plans cover 2 to 4 people, which makes it cheaper per player if siblings or teammates sign up together.
  • A free trial and a refund window. You can try it for 7 days on individual plans.

IntelliGym also says its program is based on long-running research and reports improvement figures from academy studies. Those are the company’s own claims. We haven’t seen full published details for them, so we’re not repeating the numbers here. You can read them on its product page and judge for yourself.

On the App Store, the iOS app had 2.5 stars from 22 ratings when we checked. That’s a small number of ratings, so don’t read too much into it either way.

Where a scenario trainer is different

IntelliGym’s FAQ says the program has “no fantasy stories or complex graphics” and that it “simulates the cognitive demands” of a game. Pause & Decide takes the other route: it shows you the match moment itself. Here’s one from the striker set.

Tactics board: you are the striker with the ball on the right side of the box, their keeper covers the near post, a teammate is running towards the penalty spot
70th minute, 0-0. You get the ball on the right side of the box. A midfielder is arriving behind you.
  • A Shoot at the near post.
  • B Square it to your winger at the back post.
  • C Cut it back to your midfielder arriving at the penalty spot. (pro pick)

Why C: their midfielder is still behind your runner, and both center backs have dropped towards goal, so the space around the penalty spot is empty. Your teammate can shoot first time, facing goal. A shot is never a bad idea in the box, but their keeper is on the near post with a center back in the way. The pass to the back post has to beat the keeper and a defender, and their full-back is right on your winger.

That’s the whole format: a real picture, 15 seconds, three options a decent player might pick, and an explanation that points at the detail you should have noticed. The differences in practice:

  • Real moments: you’re practising the exact pictures you’ll see on Saturday, not abstract tasks.
  • Position-specific: a winger and a center back face very different decisions. You get 20 situations for each position.
  • Short: 10 situations take a few minutes. Easy to do on the bus.
  • One payment: $27 and it’s yours. No renewals to remember.

And the honest limits: Pause & Decide does not adapt to you, it doesn’t train memory or peripheral attention as separate skills, and 100 situations is a fixed set, so once you’ve been through them you’re repeating them. We also don’t have studies of our own to point to. If adaptive brain training is what you want, that’s IntelliGym’s strength.

Other options worth knowing

IntelliGym and Pause & Decide aren’t the only ways to train decisions. Prices checked October 2026.

  • Be Your Best (VR). VR soccer training for scanning, awareness and decision-making, with Challenges, Practice, 11-a-side Matchplay and Career modes. $19/mo billed yearly or $29/mo billed monthly, with 3 seats included and a 14-day money-back guarantee. You need a Meta Quest headset. Official page. We compare it in detail on our VR soccer training alternative page.
  • Train Effective Soccer Academy (app). A training app covering technique, tactics, fitness and mentality, with a “Game Brain” feature that breaks down pro decisions. The App Store lists in-app purchases from $14.99 to $399.99. App Store listing.
  • Soccer iQ by Dan Blank (book). Two volumes of short tips on what smart players do. SoccerWire listed it at $9.99 per volume in 2021. SoccerWire. Cheap and useful for principles, though reading a rule isn’t the same as spotting the moment.
  • Small-sided games. Free, and still the best decision training there is, if you can get 6 or more players together regularly.

Try before you buy

Both products let you test them first, in different ways:

  • IntelliGym: a 7-day free trial on individual plans, plus a money-back window (7 days on monthly, 30 days on prepaid plans). Read the terms on its pricing page.
  • Pause & Decide: the free soccer IQ test uses the same format: 8 situations for your position, 15 seconds each, with the pro pick and why after every answer. No email or card needed to play.

A simple way to decide: do the free test. If you liked reading real match pictures and the explanations helped, the 100-situation version will suit you. If you found yourself wanting longer, adaptive sessions that work on attention and memory, try IntelliGym’s trial.
