Quick answer: Train Effective is an all-round soccer training app: 150+ drills, workouts and programs, mindset sessions, and “Game Brain”, tactical analyses of how pros make decisions. PRO costs $13 a month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial. Keep it if you want one app for technique, fitness and some tactics. If you mainly want to get better at decisions, a dedicated decision trainer fits better: you make the call yourself on real match pictures. Ours, Pause & Decide, is 100 situations by position for $27 once. Soccer IntelliGym and Be Your Best (VR) are subscription options.

Disclosure: Pause & Decide is our product. Unscouted has no connection to Train Effective. Everything about Train Effective below comes from its own website or its App Store and Google Play listings, linked in each section. Prices checked October 2026, in US dollars. They change, so check the official page before you buy.

What Train Effective is (and does well)

Train Effective calls itself a digital soccer academy (or football academy, depending on which store you open). Its app store listing describes training across four areas: technique, tactical knowledge, fitness and mentality. From the official listings and website:

  • A big drill library. Over 150 drills, sessions, workouts and programs, with new content added monthly, and a schedule tracker to plan your week.
  • Mindset sessions with pro athletes and experts, including Rio Ferdinand, on self-belief, motivation and discipline.
  • Game Brain. The Google Play listing calls it “our performance analysis training tool”, built to give you a step-by-step understanding of pro players’ decisions, tactics and strategies, using Premier League analysts. The pricing page lists it as “tactical analyses from Premier League analysts”.
  • Academy plan extras: 1-on-1 mentorship from coaches and weekly live online masterclasses.

Prices (website): PRO is $13 a month billed annually, Academy is $33 a month billed annually, and Clubs is $50 per player per year. There’s a 7-day free trial. The US App Store lists a range of in-app prices for the same plans, from $12.99 and $19.99 a month up to $399.99 for 12 months of Academy, so the price you see may depend on where you sign up.

Ratings: on Google Play it showed 1M+ downloads, about 4.5 stars from over 30,000 reviews, and an update on September 10, 2026. On the UK App Store it showed 4.8 stars from 7.2k ratings. That’s a lot of happy users. If you want a complete training app, it’s a serious option.

Watching a decision vs making one

Here’s the honest difference. From its own description, Game Brain teaches you how professionals decide: an analyst breaks down what a pro did and why. That’s useful. Understanding why a pro chose the switch instead of the forward pass is real knowledge.

But knowing why someone else made a choice is different from making the choice yourself, with a defender closing and a second to spare. Coaches often call this the gap between knowing and doing. A dedicated decision trainer puts you in the moment first:

  • you see the picture before anyone explains it,
  • you commit to an answer, against a clock,
  • then you find out if you were right, and which detail you missed.

That order matters: you find out what you actually notice on your own, not what seems obvious once someone has pointed at it. Neither approach is “better”. They’re different tools. Train Effective’s Game Brain is part of a bigger app. A decision trainer does only this one job.

There is some research behind training decisions from video and pictures: a 2022 systematic review of 10 studies on video-based training with soccer players found that in 8 of them, players scored better on anticipation or decision-making tests after training. The studies were small, the authors couldn’t pool the results, and only one tested whether it carried over to the field. Encouraging, not proof.

Try one: a midfielder under pressure

Here’s what “making the call yourself” looks like. Give yourself 15 seconds before you read the options.

Tactics board: you are a central midfielder in your own half receiving a pass from your left center back, an opposing midfielder is right behind you, their winger is closing your center back and your left back is unmarked on the touchline
20th minute, 0-0. Your left center back plays it into your feet. You can feel someone behind you.
  • A Turn and drive forward into midfield.
  • B Play it first time out to your left back. (pro pick)
  • C Lay it straight back to your center back.

Why B: look at their winger. He has left your left back to chase your center back, so your left back is alone on the touchline with their full-back about 20 metres away. Play it first time, before their midfielder gets tight, and your team is out of the press.

Why not A: their midfielder is about 4 metres behind you and coming. Try to turn and he gets a foot in, and you lose it in the middle of your own half.

Why not C: laying it back keeps the ball, and it’s the right call when your center back has time. Here their winger is already closing him, so you hand the problem straight back.

The lesson isn’t “always go wide”. It’s that the answer was in the picture: one opponent leaving his man. Seeing that cue fast, many times, for your position, is what scenario training is for. Our guide to decision making walks through three more.

Pick Train Effective if you want one subscription that gives you drills to do alone, fitness, mindset and some tactics, and you’ll use most of it. Pick Pause & Decide if you already have your technical work sorted (from your club or your own routine) and the thing holding you back is decisions in games. The honest limits on ours: it’s a fixed set of 100, it doesn’t adapt to you, it doesn’t train technique, and we have no studies of our own to point to.

Other decision-training options

If decisions are your focus, these are the other real options we checked. Prices checked October 2026.

  • Soccer IntelliGym. Screen-based cognitive training for awareness, memory and decisions, 30-minute sessions, from $15.90 to $21.90 a month, 7-day free trial. Pricing. See our IntelliGym alternative page.
  • Be Your Best. VR scanning and decision training on a Meta Quest, $19 a month billed yearly or $29 monthly, 3 seats, 14-day money-back. Pricing. See our VR soccer training alternative page, or IntelliGym vs Be Your Best if you’re choosing between those two.
  • Scanning tools. Cheaper apps like ScanBeat (Apple Watch reminders) and ProScan360 (on-screen cues for drills) train the looking part. We cover them on our best soccer IQ apps list.
  • Free: small-sided games with friends, and watching matches with a focus on one player in your position. Our guide to analyzing a match as a player shows how.

Using both

Train Effective and a decision trainer don’t really compete. One builds your technique and fitness, the other trains the choices you make with that technique. A simple week:

  • 3 days: a Train Effective drill or workout, or your own technical session.
  • Most days, 5 to 10 minutes: 5 to 10 situations for your position, deciding before you read the options.
  • Weekend: play, then write down one good and one bad decision from the match and what you saw (or didn’t) before it.
